Antique Chinese Carpet, Circa 1920 — Like most Chinese carpets, this one masterfully uses its gorgeous embroidery to tell a story through contrasting colors and shapes. A thin gold border surrounds the outside of the carpet, leading to a larger border inside, one that is hued a gentle navy blue. Within this frame are playful arrangements of pots and vases, with blossoming flowers and their flowing stems spilling over onto the darker blue border closest to the carpet’s core. A stunningly sprawling golden field is stitched at the core of the work, home to a variety of domestic instruments and objects. Standing lamps, potted gardens and larger vases are all represented within this beautiful antique rug.
