Antique Bidjar Rug, Persia, 1900 — The gold field of the rug springs to life with an intricate motif of finely detailed, interlocking pink blossoms and leaves, highlighted in white and black accents. Many of the blossoms cluster together in bouquet-like groupings. The broad border, black in color, contains a pattern of scrolling golden leaves, passing between small jagged gold and white tooth-like projections on either side. The border is surrounded by narrow guard borders composed of scrolling interspersed golden and pink petals. Rose motifs represent one type of important theme sometimes found in antique Persian Bidjar rugs, which come from an area of Iran that was once predominantly Kurdish. These durable, tough rugs today remain one of the most highly valued type of Persian rugs because of the extensive, thick piled knotting employed by the weavers.
