Antique Sultanabad Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – This impressive antique Oriental rug — a stunning Sultanabad from Persia made some time toward the end of the nineteenth century — is a remarkable work of art. Characterized by triple guard bands and sophisticated turtle borders linked by extended tendrils and floral vine scrolls that complement the elegant composition and color palette of the rug, this piece is simultaneously complex and beautiful. Already mentioned is the color palette and this particular rug, which is especially lovely: lively guard bands decorated with boteh motifs and floral details feature a pleasing combination of Persian blue, taupe and earthy terracotta red create a piece that is as variegated as it is unified. Recurved saz leaf motifs and exaggerated palmettes with flame-like petals decorate the elegant beige field. Hairline details and contrasting outlines accentuate the curve linear vine scrolls and lavish palmettes. This is a stunning rug, the design of which is of the very highest order.
