Antique American Hooked Rug 50068

Size: 11 ft 9 in x 18 ft (3.58 m x 5.49 m)

Antique American Hooked Rug, Circa Early 20th Century — Immigrants from Northern Europe brought with them a long tradition of producing hooked rugs. Using special tools, these hooked carpets were created by a process that involved pulling a strip of fabric through a base material. The majority of these American rugs originated in Canada and coastal New England, by the hands of women, agricultural workers and fishermen. The simplistic flowers, vines and stylized leaf imagery of this example is a classic representation. Upon a mottled reddish background, the soft blues and pinks of this composition are offset boldly by vibrant orange blossoms and black vinery. The central focus of the piece is a medallion overflowing with flowers and framed by a corresponding wreath of leaves. The corners of the rug display symmetrical, dense and colorful bouquet arrangements in the spandrels.
