Antique Turkish Ghiordes Rug, Origin: Turkey, Circa: Late 19th Century – This impressive antique Ghiordes draws upon hundreds of years of tradition, harking back as it does to the great classic Turkish prayer rugs of the Ottoman period in the seventeenth an eighteenth centuries. Here the field has in fact doubled the stepped niche design in adapting it to a room-sized format. The series of indented niches that surrounds the field recall classic Turkush Ladik rugs, just as the borders draw upon classic Mudjur design. But despite the eclectic background, the overall effect is remarkably unified, no doubt because of the consistent use of the same soft palette of pale blues and tans across the carpet.
