Abtique Agra Rug, India, Circa 1900 – This exquisite antique carpet created in Agra features a sublime latticework pattern with octagonal cells linked by continuous lines. Serrated lozenges with extended pendants and scrolling outlines decorate rows of tiles alternating with oxidized olive green panels that feature floral roundels and scrolling latch hooks. Burgundy red bands decorated with reciprocating limbs outline the edges of each cell. These continuous latch hook bands unite and divide the separate latticework cells. Geometric churn dash motifs and slanting bands decorate the secondary borders while revolving trefoils and irregular Vitruvian scrolls decorate the contrasting inner borders and highlight the sophisticated selection of oxidized olive green, regal burgundy red and ivory. This spectacular antique Indian carpet created circa 1900 features classical designs from Persia and the Caucasus, including crab borders with arching floral appendages reminiscent of cloud bands.
