Ivory Background Antique Persian Sultanabad Rug 49163, Country of Origin / Rug Type: Persian Rugs, Circa Date: 1880 – The ivory background of this antique Persian Sultanabad rug highlights the whimsically rendered tri-tone motifs. The style combines both the curvilinear traditions of classical Persia and the geometric traditions of Anatolia. The large flowers and stylized animals are part of an allover design. Four pairs of deer-like figures with stylized antlers are arranged along the vertical axis. Flowers, tendrils, buds and geometric shapes are interspersed along the same axis between the animal figures. To each side, large flowers enclosed by diamond-shaped vines are rendered on the same horizontal plane as the animal figures. Bright orange outlines the shapes, with tans and muted shades of blue used as fillers. The wide border of six small guards and a main panel of this magnificent antique rug display traditional border designs that complement the overall composition.
