Antique Farahan Sarouk Rug, Persia, Early 20th Century — The stunning antique rug contains a prominent ornate red, gold, ivory, brown and blue large central medallion on a deep black field. Cascading flowers and palmate leaves and vines extend around the medallion on red stems, each reflecting meticulous detail in composition. Four ornate irregularly shaped designs function as spandrels; they repeat the same colors as the central medallion. A broad red border carrying ornate floral scroll patterns in shades of ivory, beige, blue, black and pink surrounds the field. There are two narrow ornate sets of guard borders carrying highly detailed geometric scrolling designs. Prominent central medallions appear frequently in Farahan Sarouk rugs. The meticulous, careful attention to detail in these woven works of art lend them a distinctive, dramatic quality.
