History And Information About Canada
Canada is the largest country in total area in the Western Hemisphere, only smaller in size to Russia, globally. It is located north of the United States of America in the continent of North America and is comprised of 10 provinces and three territories, which are considered sub-national governments. These provinces and territories stretch across major oceans, one being the Atlantic in the east, the Pacific in the west and northward to the Arctic.
Canada, in its entirety, takes up about 9.98 million square kilometers of land, equating to 3.85 million square miles. Its population is thinly dispersed, however. The majority of Canadian citizens reside in highly developed, urban communities. Upwards of 80 percent of its people live in densely-populated cities near the southern border.
Canada shares that southern border with the United States, making it the longest bi-national border by way of land. Eight of the 10 provinces and territories are located alongside the borderline as are 13 of the U.S. states. It is regarded as an international boundary.
Its landscape is mostly sylvan in nature, predominately forest and tundra. Canada experiences scorching-hot summers in its southernmost regions but is well-known for its hyperborean temperatures, namely in places like Winnipeg, Saguenay and Regina. In 1857, Queen Victoria designated Ottawa as Canada’s capital. Interestingly, Ottawa is not the biggest city in the country but the fourth largest in population after metropolitan cities Toronto, Montreal and Calgary.
Exploration and colonization by the Europeans resulted in many indigenous people being pushed out of the lands encircling what we now refer to as Canada. The French and British explorers went on respective quests that spanned far into the 15th century, both deciding to take up residence on the Atlantic coast. Consequently, violence broke out among them.
In 1763, France relinquished just about all of its settlements or colonies in North America as a result of the conflict. In 1632, Canada was formed and ceded to the United Kingdom after more fighting, which led to France being vanquished.
The Province of Canada merged with a pair of British colonies, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, through a process called Confederation and was recognized as a self-governing establishment. The Statute of Westminster in 1931 acknowledged Canada as analogous with the United Kingdom. Due to repatriation in 1982, the remnant of lawful dependence on the British parliament was terminated.
Fast forward to today, in addition to being technologically advanced, it is one of the world’s wealthiest countries with its GDP (PPP) per-capita of $44,025. It ranks 12th in the Human Development Index. It is a member of various geopolitical and high-profile alliances and coalitions such as the United Nations, the Group of Ten, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, the G7 and the G20 (Group of Twenty).
Its progressive and forward-thinking economy is the 10th largest worldwide; much of this is due in part to intercontinental trade and its copious natural resources. Its multifaceted and long-standing relationship with the United States has had a weighty and substantial bearing on it economically and socially.
Canada is a commonwealth realm and belongs to the Francophonie. It is also a governmental democracy. It has a qualitative track record in the areas of education, health care insurance for all, civil rights and fiscal liberty. Queen Elizabeth is accepted as their head of state; therefore, Canada is a constitutional monarchy. It is one of the great melting pots of the world, full of diversity, ethnically and culturally and identifies as “official bilingualism.”
