Vintage Scandinavian Swedish Kilim Runner by Ingegerd Silow

This beautiful vintage Swedish kilim runner was created by the iconic Swedish rug weaver and designer Ingegerd Silow, who was one of the most celebrated mid-century Scandinavian rug designers. Silow’s carpets are generally characterized by a distinctly geometric and decidedly modern style. This runner length carpet beautifully showcases that style, and also features a pallet that is typical of Silow. In this kilim carpet, a tangle of brown, yellow, and grey figures interact with one another against a background of ivory. Though lacking definitive structure and detail work, these abstract tangles of color are nevertheless evocative of a particular image: a tangle of bare trees, stretching into the sky. There is more color toward the bottom of the composition and less at the top, giving the kilim runner rug an intriguing asymmetry that emphasizes the long and narrow nature of the subject matter, as well as the format of the carpet. An intriguing work, this mid-century Swedish kilim  runner is truly a lovely example.

Perfect for the season, this vintage Scandinavian Ingegerd Silow Swedish kilim runner is inspired by the beauty of leafless winter trees. Although the tree branches in this composition are recognizable, they are geometrically abstracted in a way that is perfectly in line with mid-century Scandinavian design sensibilities. Rendered in a palette of warm burnt umber and ocher, as well as cool shades of charcoal, this piece is at once vibrantly shaded and sophisticated in a neutral way.
