In this vintage rug, a contrasting pallet of deep black and bright primary colors create a great energy throughout the composition, while its unusual format gives it a deep sense of uniqueness

Vintage Persian Ghashgai Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa date: Mid-Twentieth Century – Here is a unique and vibrant vintage carpet – a Ghashgai carpet that was woven in Persia during the middle years of the twentieth century. Among all Persian rugs and carpets, it is those of Ghashgai origin that possess some of the most intriguing and unique tribal patterns. In this particular example, a contrasting pallet of deep black and bright primary colors create a great energy throughout the composition, while its unusual format gives it a deep sense of uniqueness and individuality. An asymmetrical series of borders starts things off, with a colorful procession of squares filling the outermost border; a colorful coming together of diamond shapes in the next; and then solid bands of red and black, which are separated from the others by a narrow striped border. The effect of this asymmetry is such that the eye is guided toward the center of the carpet, wherein an outsized series of three stacked and superimposed black diamond figures stand at attention. This dark portion of the rug commands attention, and creates a fascinating contrast with the bright primary colors that appear throughout the remainder of the composition.

This vintage Persian Ghashgai rug features a lovely geometric pattern composed in a primary color palette of blue, red, and yellow, with a black inner field and cream and green accents. The angular, zig-zagging pattern of this piece gives the rug a zestful, energetic aura.

Ghashqai rugs are named after the tribe in Persia residing in the Southern Zagros Mountains whose artisans weave them. Combining unique details with traditional tribal motifs, the rugs are often very complexly geometric, but can also feature elaborate floral designs or pictorial scenes. A distinguishable mark of Gashqai rugs is the use of flat weave. These rugs are known to be extremely durable, making them a great choice for high-traffic areas in the home.

Uniquely, the women who weave Ghashgai carpets often will collaborate on their friends and neighbors rugs, working for a time on their own, and then moving to the loom of her acquaintance. The collaborative spirit of the Ghashgai tribespeople enhances the creativity and uniqueness of each woven rug.

This lovely tribal Ghashgai rug is a lovely and vibrant accent, that would enhance the mood of any modern interior.
