Moroccan Rug, Morocco, Mid-20th Century – This gorgeous vintage Moroccan rug is fascinating for many reasons. It was created in the middle part of the 20th century. It has a simple pattern and a clean look, but also has an interesting story.

The Berber tribes of the Atlas Mountains of Morocco have been weaving these beautiful rugs for hundreds of years. Their rug designs date as far as pre-Islamic times. They were made to cover the walls, floors, and roofs of their tents to protect them from the elements. Many of the designs on the rugs have a special meaning and symbolism. The Berber people would wear these symbols as tattoos, carve them into rocks and boulders, and weave them into textiles.

The double diamond pattern of this rug is a symbol that is meant to ward off the evil eye. The linked triangles are the symbol for the snake or a fish skeleton. This symbol was used to denote a holy man, or someone said to possess great magical and medicinal powers. This makes it an unusual piece, and we can only guess as to why it was created and who for whom. All we know is that it is a special piece and a rare find.

This is a gorgeous piece for a modern space. It could easily be a unique piece for a black and white room to add interest. It has a formal, geometric design that is minimalist and modern. The rug is a light color and will create an open and airy feeling in the room. The tribal design of the rug also makes the perfect Boho chic element, too. Moroccan rugs are known for their long pile that gives them a plush feel underfoot and adds soft texture to the space. This is a magnificent yet simple rug for a wide range of contemporary design styles.
