Chinese Art Deco Rug, Origin: China, Circa: First Quarter of the Twentieth Century – Here is a truly lovely antique rug – an antique Art Deco carpet that was woven in China during the early decades of the twentieth century. Boldly expressing the dynamic aesthetics of the Art Deco period, this minimally adorned antique Chinese carpet is a fascinating exercise in early modern design. A narrow band of a bold brown hue surrounds the perimeter of this Art Deco carpet, unbroken and undecorated. The simplicity of this border sets the tone for the remainder of the carpet: a tone of restraint and balance. Following the brown border, a band of ivory bounded off on either side by narrow strips of a soft, orange-brown color completes the borders. Within the field, a largely uninterrupted expanse of soft ivory dominates. Within the center, stacked vertically, are the three medallions that together comprise the entirety of the detail work in this antique Chinese carpet. The top and the bottom medallions match one another, and consist of a loose tangle of curving vines, the ends of which suggest dragons. The central medallion figure, meanwhile, consists of a rectilinear pattern of lines, which contrast nicely with the sinuous qualities of the other medallions. A lovely example, this Art Deco carpet from China exemplifies this exciting style.
