Gavleborgs Lans Hemslojd Rugs – Founded in 1949, the Gavleborgs Lans Hemslojd was a local handcraft organization dedicated to selling locally produced crafts and helping regional artists earn a living. County handcraft associations were at the forefront of Sweden’s mid-century textile Renaissance, and the Gavleborgs Lans Hemslojd was no exception. This local organization was headed by notable weaving teachers and acclaimed hand-craft greats like Anna-Maria Hoke and Maj Svanstrom. These master weavers and designers were instrumental in establishing and growing the Gavleborgs Lans Hemslojd, which opened its first handcraft shop in 1950.

Gavleborgs Lans Hemslojd represented artists throughout Gavleborg County and maintained a shop in the county seat of Gavle. Before joining this association, Anna-Maria Hoke designed area rugs for the neighboring Vastmanlands Hemslojd, and Svanstrom created a number of flat-weave kilims for the Klockaregardens Hemslojd, which ceased operations around 1950. Both Hoke and Svanstrom were notable weavers who earned acclaim in Sweden and internationally. Carpets they designed and constructed for the association bear the hemslojd’s mark “GLH” and the artist’s initials. Works signed “A-M H” and “MS” were also produced for the Vastmanlands Lans Hemslojdsforbund (VLH) and Klockaregardens Hemslojd (KH) respectively.
