A Stunning Vintage Swedish Kilim Rug Signed Svea Noren, Country Of Origin: Scandinavia, Circa Date: Vintage – This gorgeous, mid-century modern area rug uses earthy colors and calming geometric shapes. It is a beautiful Swedish kilim rug signed by an artist, who you might not have heard of, but who undoubtedly created masterpieces that are iconic representations of mid-century modern Scandinavian art. This vintage piece bears the signature SN and is part of a group of vintage Scandinavian area rugs that have created quite a mystery in the world of vintage rugs.
The letters SN is the signature of the artist Svea Noren. Not much is known about her, but her signature can be found on rugs from Scandinavia that were created exclusively for the Nordiska Kompaniet department store. This information comes from the Center for Business History in Stockholm and a notebook of sketches of some of her works. We do not know much about her life, other than that she worked under the innovative designer for the store, Astrid Sampe.
Astrid Sampe coined the phrase, “order is freedom,” which seems to characterize much of her work and the work of Svea Noren as well. Sampe produced works throughout the 1950’s, and this piece appears to be contemporary with other Swedish furnishings of the time.
The notebook, identified as belonging to Svea Noren, contains several designs that often appear with multiple variations. It appears that she produced several popular designs for the retailer, and also created variations based on them for custom work. Many of the designs were rendered in multiple color combinations.
Swedish design is meant to mimic nature and evokes a feeling of being in a nature. The artist used natural colors that reflect the colors of Earth and sky. The geometric shapes withing this magnificent vintage rug create rhythm, and the artists varied the cadence of the piece but kept the symmetry throughout flat weave rug. The result is a beautiful vintage kilim rug that will compliment a range of contemporary and mid-century modern decor styles, including ultramodern and retro-inspired spaces.
