Beautiful  Vintage Moroccan Blue Rug, Country of Origin: Morocco, Circa Date: Mid 20th Century – The magnificent color of this mid-20th century Moroccan rug is one that you do not see often. It is a stunning piece that is perfect for a Boho chic room with colors that pop or for a room of ultra-modern, retro, and contemporary designs. Aside from the gorgeous color and fascinating designs, this rug has a fascinating story to tell.

This rug was created by the Beni Ourain tribes of Morocco. This group of nomads is actually a confederation of tribes, each with its own territory within the mountain range. They all have different tribal customs and rug designs that are unique. These rugs are woven by the women and were originally meant to protect the people from the elements. They have a long, soft pile that is made from a durable wool that is produced by local sheep. Interestingly, these rugs were meant to be used with the pile-side down. That is why the design is sharper on what would normally be considered to be the back of the rug.

Today, we love to use these rugs with the pile facing upwards to add texture and a soft feel underfoot that invites you to wiggle your toes. The colors and symbols in the rugs tell a story and serve as a form of artistic expression for the women of the tribe. The colors are created from plant materials found in the area surrounding the tribe. The color blue represents wisdom. When the pattern shifts, it represents changes or an interruption in the storyline, such as a marriage, birth, or death.

A rug with a brilliant blue background is a rare find, and this one is breathtaking. It would be the perfect addition to a coastal room with colors that reflect the earth and sky. This rug is an example that demonstrates why midcentury designers fell in love with these special works of art and why we still love them today.
