This rug was created by the Beni Ourain tribes of Morocco. This group of nomads is actually a confederation of tribes, each with its own territory within the mountain range. They all have different tribal customs and rug designs that are unique. These rugs are woven by the women and were originally meant to protect the people from the elements. They have a long, soft pile that is made from a durable wool that is produced by local sheep. Interestingly, these rugs were meant to be used with the pile-side down.
