Vintage Scandinavian Verner Panton “Quadrat” Textile, Country Of Origin: Scandinavia, Circa Date: Mid 20th Century – This vibrant textile in brilliant oranges is the unmistakable work of midcentury designer Verner Panton. The pattern is one of Panton’s pieces called Quadrat (Kvadrat). It as created in 1969 and appears in many of his ensembles and collections through 1974. This piece is an iconic mid century design from an artist who would define an era.

Panton graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen and would spend the first two years of his career as an understudy to the famous Danish designer, Arne Jacobsen. However, Panton’s vision was innovative and broke the established norms of midcentury design. Panton left to begin his own firm, where he could create his vision unrestricted.

Panton’s work is characterized by vibrant colors and simple geometric shapes. He used techniques that give his pieces a three-dimensional, almost sculptural quality, even though they are a flat surface. Quadrat refers to the use of the square as the main design element.

In this piece, Panton used alternating squares with gradients to create the illusion that the lighter squares appear closer, and the darker squares are farther away. The placement of the squares also makes the vertical and horizontal lines appear to be wavy.

Panton was known for creating entire rooms that were futuristic, minimalist, and that used vivid colors. His collections were meant to express optimism for the future. Quadrat textiles were often part of a collection that included his cone table, flowerpot hanging pendant lamps, and famous Panton chairs. The Quadrat textiles were included in the Mira X series from 1969 to 1974.

Panton’s work experienced a resurgence in popularity during the early 2000s, as did midcentury style, in general. This is an essential piece for an authentic vintage midcentury room or for a retro-style room. This is a large piece of fabric, and a rare find for the Panton collector.
