Vintage Scandinavian Verner Panton “Gradient” Textile in Sea Foam Color, Country Of Origin: Scandinavia, Circa Date: Mid 20th Century – This classic textile panel is the creation of the iconic midcentury modern artist Verner Panton. It is called “Gradient” and was created as part of the 1969 Décor I furniture collection. In his early career, Panton worked under the direction of Danish Modern architect Arne Jacobsen. His first task was to help create the iconic 7 Chair. However, Panton proved to be too much of a visionary, and his unconventional designs were considered to be a bit much for more conservative tastes.

Only two years after he started with Arne Jacobsen, Panton split off and formed his own firm. Through the years, his designs became more radical and futuristic. He began working with psychologists to explore the effect that color had on the human experience. His exhibitions entailed creating an entire room that created a fantasy world of light, color, and simple forms. They were an immersive experience and were meant to evoke emotion.

It was during the years 1969 and 1970 when Panton created his most popular and famous collection. Panton wanted people to be able to recreate this experience of color and form in their own homes. The Décor I collection included furniture, lighting, accessories, and textiles that could be mixed and matched to create a look that was optimistic and futuristic.

This textile is created from calming sea foam in eight different saturation levels. They are arranged to give it a three-dimensional effect that looks like two columns. These panels would have been used to create floor to ceiling curtain panels and accent pillows. The sea foam in this piece have an organic feel that is calming and serene yet distinctively modern.

This textile is the perfect size to be framed as a piece of wall art or to be used for smaller accessories that give the room a Panton Era touch. Panton’s work continues to grow in popularity, and it is now a part of modern, minimalist, retro, and Scandinavian modern designs. This piece is perfect for the midcentury collector or to add a colorful and contemporary look to a modern room.
