Vintage Bein Ourain Moroccan Carpet, Morocco, Mid-Twentieth Century – Here is a charming, beautifully composed vintage rug – a Mid-Twentieth Century creation of the celebrated Beni Ourain tribes of Northern Morocco, a group that has long been among the most prolific and admired producers of traditional rugs anywhere in the world. This particular rug is a splendid example, boasting many of the qualities and characteristics most sought after in such rugs. For instance, the understated color pallet of ivory and deep, dark brown – which is utilized only in the detail work – is quintessentially Beni Ourain. So too is the abstract arrangement of detail work throughout the piece, the asymmetry of which gives no indication as to correct orientation of the carpet, nor any hints as to any underlying subject matter; rather, the nature of this abstraction and asymmetry  compels the eye to move throughout the composition, tracing the fascinating, irregular lines, some of which terminate at horizontal bars, some of which disappear into the border, and some of which seem never to end, snaking their way up and down the long, eleven vertical feet of the carpet. Perhaps what is most appealing and most intriguing about Beni Ourain Moroccan carpets such as this piece is their traditional nature, which, despite being authentic, feels perfectly at home in a modern interior. This coming together of the traditional with the cutting edge gives these rugs a fascinating added dimension, infusing them with a liveliness that practically jumps forth from the carpet itself. An excellent example of traditional Beni Ourain carpets, this vintage Moroccan rug delights with its exceptional overall composition.
