Antique Persian Farahan Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Late 19th Century – Here is a beautiful and exceptional classically composed antique Oriental rug – an antique Persian Farahan Sarouk carpet that was hand woven in Persia during the waning years of the nineteenth century. Characterized by an especially comely and impressively woven composition, this charming antique Farahan carpet beautifully communicates some of the finer points of classical antique Persian rug design, all while maintaining distinction and an identity all its own. In place of the medallion design customary on fine antique Farahans, this extraordinary example has an allover design of flame palmettes and Harshang or ‘crab’ flowers derived from classical Persian and Caucasian carpets. The drawing is elegant yet slightly tribal and exciting, but what really makes this carpet so exquisite is the balance between the soft apricot tones of the field and the deep sage green ground. This color juxtaposition is reversed in the border where a stunning interlacing arabesque vine scroll in green is set against a creamy pale apricot ground. Rarely do color and design interact with such beauty and synergy.
