Fine Classic Antique Persian Mohtashem Kashan Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – This lavish antique Kashan has scalloped diamond medallion with richly articulated floral detail and grand finials. The medallion is set against an ivory field defined or enclosed by undulating terracotta corner pieces. A terracotta inner medallion echoes the corner pieces just as the ivory quatrefoil at the very center echoes the field color. In the same way all these forms share the same type of floral vine scroll detail. The overall effect, an expanding series of concentric forms, is reminiscent of the ripples on a pond. A complex arabesque palmette vine scroll of classic Persian type makes up the main border, set against a dark blue ground to frame the field emphatically.
