Large Contemporary Moroccan Rug, Origin: Morocco, Circa: Early 21st Century – Here is a wonderful contemporary carpet – a Moroccan rug, woven with an exciting and dynamic composition. Generally speaking, Moroccan rugs and carpets – especially examples from the middle years of the twentieth century – are prized for their exciting, seemingly modern designs. However, the patterns woven into these carpets by the Beni Ourain tribes-people of the Atlas Mountains are in fact anything but modern; for while they exhibit some of the same aesthetic tendencies that were celebrated by modern artists in the west, they are in fact tribal compositions, the aesthetics of which have been important to the Berber people for centuries. This particular example does an excellent job of communicating the finer points of this style: the line work, rendered in a dark brown, contrasts beautifully against the ivory. Generally, these lines are arranged in a grid pattern. However, there is certainly an eccentric manner to the manner that these lines flow, with some interrupted suddenly, without warning. The overall effect is one of enchanting abstraction.
