Antique Agra Rug, Origin: India, Circa:  Late 19th Century – This lovely antique Agra features a classic Persian ‘Herati’ pattern, although the fluid, less geometric drawing here gives the design a rather distinctive new quality. The tiny subordinate detail is so complex and lace-like, that little of the terracotta background shows through, and where it does, it appears more as figure than ground. The delicate and exquisitely drawn ‘turtle’ or vine scroll border provides that perfect contrast, with its openness balancing the complex density of the field. The gentle palette of autumnal tones, soft blue, and ivory also adds the requisite touch in regard to the rich design.
