Wednesday Wishlist — This week’s Wednesday Wishlist rug is a beautiful antique Persian Bakshaish rug, circa 1880. Composed in tawny browns, warm peaches and rusts, and soothing teal, the tones of this rug evoke the calming powers of nature. The large-scale floral pattern that makes up the field of this antique Bakshaish rug reaffirms that feeling, and gives the piece a sense of movement.
Aside from its beauty, this rug, like all antique Bakshaish rugs, is incredibly durable and made-to-last. Its durability is due in part to the strength of the wool used in Bakshaish rugs, which comes from sheep grazed in the copper-rich area of Northern Iran. The copper in the soil and water of this area gives the wool an extra strength, unlike wools from other regions.
In addition to its strength, the all-over pattern and neutral hues of this rug make it an incredibly adaptable decorating piece. The diversity in color present in this rug mean that it would look fabulous as part of many different color schemes, from rich wood and jewel tones, to soft beiges and seafoam colors. Likewise, the large, all-over pattern of this rug lends itself to both modern and traditionally-styled interiors. This Bakshaish rug is a wonderfully adaptive iteration of these artful antique Persian rugs.
