Winter Home Decor Trends: Decorating With Antlers

Now, generally I don’t condone hunting animals of any kind nor do I eat meat or wear animal products (except in my shoes, belts, and bags).

However, with the imminent death of summer lurking around the corner, I can’t help but fear the winter that is to come. Let me tell you, I do not miss schlepping through frigid temps and mounds of sneet (a mixture of snow and sleet).

With the invasion of Jack Frost in a couple of months, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite winter trends for home decor, ANTLERS.

There is something magically vintage about antlers. Like I said, don’t go all Oregon Trail and take to the woods with the rifle. Please leave Bambi alone. The alternative is faux antlers, which no one will tell the difference and will  make you look more like a humane civil human being.

Antlers are a great way to add a little ambiance to your den or dining room. They make a serious statement and draw major focus to the walls. Pair these guys with a great wall color, dark-stained side board, fierce mantelpiece, or an oak dining set, and you’ve got it made.

How do you use antlers as decor?

Using antlers as decor can add a rustic and natural touch to your home or space. However, it’s important to note that using antlers ethically and legally is essential. Many countries and regions have specific regulations governing the use of antlers from animals like deer, elk, and moose. Be sure to obtain antlers legally and from reputable sources, such as hunting seasons or antique shops, to ensure you are not contributing to illegal wildlife trade or poaching.

Here are some ideas for using antlers as decor:

  • Wall Mounts: One of the most common ways to use antlers decoratively is by mounting them on a wall. You can attach them individually or create an eye-catching arrangement with multiple antlers. They can serve as a focal point in a room, like above a fireplace or as a centerpiece on a feature wall.
  • Chandeliers: Antlers can be used to create unique and rustic chandeliers. These can make a stunning statement piece in a dining room or foyer. You can either craft your own DIY chandelier or purchase one from a store specializing in rustic decor.
  • Candle Holders: Small sections of antlers can be hollowed out to create candle holders. Place these on a dining table or mantel for a warm and inviting atmosphere.
  • Coat Racks: Attach antlers to a wooden board, and you have a creative and functional coat rack. Hang this near your entryway to add a rustic touch and provide a convenient place for coats and hats.
  • Drawer Pulls and Cabinet Handles: For a subtle and unique touch, consider using antlers as drawer pulls or cabinet handles in a kitchen or bathroom. This can add a touch of rustic charm to your cabinetry.
  • Mirror Frames: Incorporate antlers into a mirror frame for a distinctive and nature-inspired piece. This works well in bathrooms, bedrooms, or even entryways.
  • Table Centerpieces: Place antlers in the center of a dining table and adorn them with seasonal decorations like flowers, pinecones, or candles. This creates a rustic and visually appealing centerpiece.
  • Antler Art: If you’re feeling creative, you can use antlers to create sculptures or wall art. This might involve painting or assembling them in unique ways to form abstract or representational art.
  • Antler Furniture: Some furniture pieces incorporate antlers into their design, such as chairs, coffee tables, or side tables. These can be great conversation starters and focal points in a room.
  • Display Shelves: Attach antlers to a wooden plank to create unique display shelves. Use them to showcase small decorative items, books, or collectibles.

The key to using antlers as decor is moderation. Overusing antlers can make your space feel cluttered or overwhelming. Incorporate them thoughtfully into your design to create a harmonious and visually appealing atmosphere. Additionally, be aware of the legal and ethical considerations when obtaining and using antlers as decor.

How do you style antlers?

Styling antlers involves integrating them into your overall interior design or decor scheme in a way that complements your aesthetic preferences and the ambiance you want to create.

Here are some tips on how to style antlers effectively:

  • Choose the Right Location: Select a suitable spot for displaying antlers. Consider the size of the antlers and the room’s layout. Antlers can be a striking focal point, so place them where they can draw attention without overwhelming the space.
  • Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to mix antlers with other decor elements. They can work well with various design styles, from rustic and traditional to modern and eclectic. Combining antlers with contrasting materials and textures can create a visually appealing balance.
  • Color Coordination: Take the color of the antlers into account when styling. The natural color of antlers is typically warm and earthy, so consider incorporating complementary colors into your decor palette. This can help create a cohesive look.
  • Balance and Symmetry: Achieve balance by using antlers in pairs or symmetrical arrangements. For example, if you have a pair of antlers, you can place them on either side of a fireplace or mirror for a balanced look.
  • Layering: Use antlers as part of layered decor. Combine them with artwork, mirrors, and other decorative items to create depth and visual interest on your walls.
  • Seasonal Decor: Change the decor around your antlers seasonally or during holidays. For instance, you can hang wreaths or string lights on antlers during the winter holidays, or adorn them with flowers during the spring.
  • Lighting: If you’re using antlers as part of a chandelier or light fixture, consider how the lighting affects the overall ambiance. Warm, soft lighting can enhance the rustic and cozy feel that antlers often evoke.
  • Functional Decor: Incorporate antlers into functional decor. For example, use them as curtain tiebacks, lamp bases, or as part of a unique furniture piece.
  • Minimalism: If you prefer a minimalist or contemporary look, opt for clean and simple arrangements with antlers. A single antler or a small grouping can add a touch of nature without overpowering the space.
  • Personal Touch: Incorporate antlers that hold personal significance or memories. Perhaps they were handed down through generations or collected during a special trip. Displaying these antlers can add a personal touch to your decor.
  • Maintenance: Keep your antlers clean and well-maintained. Dust them regularly and inspect for any signs of damage or deterioration. Proper care ensures they continue to enhance your decor.

Styling antlers should reflect your personal taste and the overall ambiance you want to create in your space. Don’t be afraid to experiment and adjust until you achieve a look that suits your preferences and the room’s aesthetic.
