Antique Persian Heriz Rug #48005, circa 1920 — This week’s Wednesday Wishlist post features a beautiful hand-made antique Persian Heriz rug from the Nazmiyal Collection, which was crafted during the first quarter of the Twentieth Century, around the year 1920. Antique Heriz rugs, such as this one, are woven in Northwest Persia and the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan, and are renowned for their durability: Because of traces of copper in the drinking water of the sheep that graze in this area, the wool used to make Heriz carpets is particularly strong, as copper works as a natural mordant and dye fixative. Futhermore, unlike some other styles of rug from this region, Heriz carpets are woven with the symmetric Turkish or Ghiordes knot, which is attached to a woven foundation that includes a thick cotton warp and weft.

The rug features angular castellated borders, which are balanced by curving natural motifs such as flowers, vines, and other plant life throughout, giving this Oriental rug a lively and rhythmic quality.
