Stunning Rustic Antique Persian Tribal Bakshaish Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1880 – The antique Persian Bakshaish rugs are some of the most iconic in the world of antique Persian rugs. They were woven in the same general area as the antique Persian Heriz Serapi rugs but these specific antique rugs tend to be older, more tribal and more open in design.
This antique Persian Bakshaish rug was made around 1880 and features contrasting tones of rustic red and sky blue against a mostly solid cream colored background. The main border of this tribal antique Bakshaish rug is based on a rustic red tone and has a variety of complex geometric and tribal patterns. This main border is flanked by two smaller narrower guard borders that also featured more tribal and geometric patterns. But these narrower borders were created with a charcoal brown color which allows those smaller patterns to pop in the most subtle and artistic way. These borders, along with solid bands of the cream color that surround the entire parameter of the piece, create the most perfect frame for this magnificent Persian rug.
The center field of the Bakshaish rug features a diamond shape central rug medallion and encroaching corner motifs in sky blue. Surrounding the medallion we see floating tribal and primitive rug motifs that are seemingly floating atop the solid cream center. These floating emblems are very basic in design but they do incorporate all the colors that we see within the rug itself. This play on the placement of the forms and colors creates an extremely pleasing look and feel that is also quite calming yet facinating at the same time.
This is truly one of the best rugs of its kind especially when it comes to the more tribal rugs in larger room sizes. That is due to the fact that most of the tribal area rugs where woven in much smaller sizes.
