Karapinar Rug, Turkey c. 1920 – This rustic antique Karapinar rug has a pleasing medallion composition with graphic qualities and symbolic decorations. Strong rectilinear motifs and carefully outlined protection symbols have a bold presence that is exaggerated by the clear colors and minimalist composition. Chains of lozenge-shaped eye symbols and borders filled with cruciform tiles represent ancient iconography while giving structure to the formal composition. The central trousseau medallion features crisp right-angle lines flanked by lozenge-shaped pendants that float over the sumptuous grapefruit-tone ground. Minor lozenge motifs fill the open field while performing protective functions that are mirrored in the richly decorative borders. Charcoal-colored outlines, clear pinks and soft lichen greens are expertly paired with neutral tones and deep lapis blues that highlight the graphic qualities of each symbolic device featured in this outstanding antique Turkish Karapinar carpet.
