Antique Turkish Oushak Carpet, Country of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: Early 20th Century – Western Turkey produced some of the most desirable carpets attributed to the Ottoman Empire, and this vintage Oushak rug upholds the tradition with a blend of tribal and traditional themes. Pale red and soft blue-green pleasantly dominate the spectrum of this work in muted balance. The primary border is flanked on both sides by three strata. Each of these peripheral trios consists of a pair of barber pole stripes separated by an undulating vine bearing tiny rosettes and small triangular amulets. The broad primary stripe represents a cool blue stream flowing with symbolic flora, fauna, and the promise of renewal. The ivory central field is bedecked with fifteen asymmetrical medallions aligned in rows of three. The medallions enclose traditional floral, scorpion, and star motifs, each radiating leaf-like hooks and chevrons into their surroundings. As elemental as earth wind and fire, this pleasing piece portrays the promise, bounty, and energy of life itself.
