Antique Turkish Oushak Rug, Country of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: Early 20th Century – Here is a beautifully composed and classically appealing antique Oriental rug – an antique Oushak carpet, woven in Turkey during the early years of the twentieth century. Turkish rugs and carpets, and especially Oushak rugs, are often characterized by lowly-contrasting fields and detail work, generally composed of soft colors. This charming antique Oushak has a design derived from classical Northwest Persian garden carpets. To either side of a central inscribed cartouche are stylized shrubs and L-shaped stylized willow branches in ivory and apricot, all set against a soft brown field. The main borders are narrow with a simple floral vinescroll, flanked by geometric minor borders to frame the field more effectively. The softness of the coloration is nicely underscored by the lustrous sheen of the soft wool pile. A beautiful antique Oriental rug, this antique Turkish Oushak carpet is an excellent example of a popular style.
