Rare Antique Ottoman Embroidery Textile, Circa: 17th Century, Country Of Origin: Turkey – The Ottoman Empire came into power in the late 14th century and remained influential until the 1920s. During the 17th century, the Empire was at its peak and a center for the arts. Gold-embroidered textiles showed the wealth and power of the Empire. Much of what we know about textiles during this time comes from miniature paintings and only a handful of surviving pieces. For this reason, this piece is a real treat and a rare find for your textile collection.

Ottoman textiles were known for their large-scale designs and bold, contrasting colors. Much of the textile production at that time was under state control. The Ottoman Courts commissioned highly-skilled and trained artists to create works in gold and silver, known as seraser, for use in ceremonies and daily court life. Works in gold and silver could only be created by guilds of special artists who had earned that right.

The stylized floral patterns that you see on this textile piece were created during the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent in the 16th century. They remained a recognizable part of textile production through the end of the Empire. When this textile was created, sumptuary laws prevented those who were not members of the Court to possess such a beautiful goldwork piece.

According to the latest style forecasts, you can expect metallic finishes to be a bigger part of our interiors in the future. This new look is all about creating contrasts, like mixing pieces with hard edges and those with a soft, natural look. Gold reflects lighting in the room, and the goldwork on this piece will add just a touch of shimmer to the space. The goldwork accents the design and contrasts with the folk-art feel of the rest of the piece.

Another trend that you can expect to see more of is a contrast between antique and modern pieces. Ottoman textiles were meant to make a bold statement, and this piece will be an excellent way to add brilliant color to your space. This piece is small enough to be mounted or framed as a piece of artwork for your wall. Our team at Nazmiyal Gallery will be happy to answer any questions you might have about this piece or any of the other fine pieces in our collection.
