Prayer rugs are one of the more widely known instance of Oriental rugs, and are generally characterized by a horizontal asymmetry that is the product of some sort of direction indicator being woven into the carpet. This direction indicator is used to Orient the carpet (and the praying individual) toward the Kaaba in Mecca. In this particular example, we see a stylized design in the field that comes to a point – this is the direction indicator. This particular Turkish rug is further characterized by its lovely blue field, and the traditional, geometric elements of design that occur throughout the complex borders. Reds and ivories work together in these borders contrast beautifully with the blue of the field, as well as with internal instances of interwoven red and ivory. A fascinating and culturally insightful piece, this Turkish prayer rug is a remarkable example.
