Textile, Laos, 1st Quarter of the 20th Century – Ancient mythical figures and auspicious cultural symbols decorate this phenomenal antique Laotian textile. Unlike other symbols that must always be treated with caution and respect, the flamboyant Garuda is believed to be a celestial creature that is always associated with benevolence. In many myths, the Garuda or sun bird is the celestial counterpart of the river-dwelling Naga and is said to transport babies much like the stork in Western culture. Within the colorful segmented composition, chic papyrus-colored neutrals are paired with vivid hues of fuchsia, pink and intense violet. Minor motifs function as supportive space fillers that complete the symbolic composition of this delightful antique Laotian textile.
