Antique Bakshaish Carpet, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900

This antique Oriental rug is notable not only for its beautiful and unique tribal design and bold coloring, but also for it’s former celebrity owner Dustin Hoffman! Despite its ties to Hollywood, this carpet is traditionally middle-eastern: With its rusty orange and deep blue palette, and its abstracted symbols and geometric patterns, this carpet is a wonderful example of tribal Persian rug design.

Gorgeous Persian Bakshaish Carpet from the Estate of Dustin Hoffman!

Bakshaish rugs are incredibly desirable because they adapt the tribal all-over designs of small village carpets into larger size rugs, which typically have finer, more symmetrical patterns. Persian Bakshaish Carpets, however, make use of scattered space-fillers; alternatively they may apply a principle of open space to allow the effects of the drawing to stand out graphically. The tribal trend is as strong as ever, so room-sized, authentic tribal rugs are highly coveted by interior designers. This particular rug, at approximately 11 feet by 14 feet, is a wonderfully workable size for many modern rooms.

Persian Bakshaish Carpets are also prized for their lustrous wool, which has extra sheen because of the nutrients present in the grazing lands of the sheep in Northern Iran. This luster, combined with the vivid colors of Persian Bakshaish Carpets, makes for a truly attention-grabbing conversation piece.

This elegant Bakshaish antique rug makes excellent use of contrast between the bright, tangerine orange borders and the deep, midnight blue center. Within the carpet’s thick frame is a series of angular flowers and stems, buttermilk yellow in their primary hue but containing elements of baby’s breath blue around them. At the center of the carpet, amidst the night-like field of blue, is a series of ocher and pale yellow shapes, set in alternating rows between each other. At the center of these figures is an angled circle, which creates an almost eye-like appearance, which lends a mystical and vivacious tone to the carpet.

Woven during the third quarter of the 19th century, this carpet (previously owned by the famed actor Dustin Hoffman) is quite breathtaking. As opposed to many of the rugs that were woven in big manufactures (where the weaver had no artistic influence into what they were weaving), these tribal rugs offer us a unique window in the the inner workings and artistic approach of the weaver. These weavers are true outsider artists who cared more about creating a work of art than a symmetrical floor covering. That is why, the older tribal rugs from North West Persia (such as this one) are so unique – every single piece is it’s own unique work of art (just like painters who create a number of artistic works over the course of their lives). In keeping with this artistic approach to rug weaving, this piece is quite special. The lack of symmetry, the lack of consistency and wonderful use of colors make us feel as though the artist wanted to try mystify us withe his / her personal and whimsical approach.
