Tabriz Rug by Haji Jalili, Persia c. 1880 – This superlative antique Persian carpet from Tabriz is a textural masterpiece that embodies the artistry and precision of the greatest master weavers. The mansion-sized field contains an immensely detailed allover pattern that is set over a robust chestnut-colored background. Precise latticework trellises link an elegant series of ornamental rosettes and flowering shrubs while creating sheltered lozenge-shaped compartments that contain beautifully detailed palmettes carried on sweeping branches. The beauty and detail of the exquisite botanical decorations are redoubled in the patrician borders, which include multiple sets of heavily patterned guardbands and superb main borders that contain several reciprocating elements. In the masterful main borders, cypress trees flanked by flamboyant wreaths are juxtaposed against artful shrubs covered with colorful fruits and filamentous flowers that display an extraordinary level of artistic finesse.
