This exquisite antique Persian rug from Sultanabad depicts a grand botanical medallion flanked by Saz leaves and framed by archetypal turtle and vine scroll borders.

Antique Sultanabad Rug, Origin: Persia, Circa: Late 19th Century – Rendered in a softly oxidized triad of ecru, terra cotta and Persian blue, this splendid antique Persian rug from Sultanabad depicts a softly abrashed monochromatic field decorated with an elaborate ogival medallion. Pendulous chains of minor medallions, octofoils and ornate floral motifs bracket the grand botanical medallion, which features a spacious series of elegant serrated Saz leaves and lush polychromatic Shah Abbasi palmettes. Exquisite minor borders decorated with dainty florals and coffered S-hooks reflect the gently oxidized hues that are featured in the timeless color scheme. The narrow guardbands support the outstanding main borders that feature an archetypal turtle and vinescroll pattern filled with detailed rosettes, flourishing Herati leaves and grand turtle motifs that are set over a neutral background.

This Ziegler carpet is yet another example of how unique this production was. Softer and more muted, this example of Persian rug weaving bring together the best of both elegance and sophistication. The field pattern is simple which much open space. The borders are far more intricate and stylized. The colors are so soft and decorative that this seemingly design dichotomy results in a complimentary artistic impact that is quite impressive in a subtle and happy way – the mark of a truly artistic mind and approach.
