Antique Oversize Persian Sultanabad Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900 — The brown field of this antique rug, an antique Persian Sultanabad rug, carries a motif of variable geometric designs in blue, dark brown, white, pink and gray colors. The patterns might represent contrasting palmette symbols, pointing in four perpendicular directions; although representing the same general shape, no two designs on the field appear exactly identical. Instead, slight variations occur that cause each symbol to appear a bit different from the others. The broad brown border presents scrolling interwoven blossoms. It is surrounded by narrow guard borders of scrolling interspersed florets and palmette symbols. The Iranian city of Sultanabad during the 1800s and 1900s produced many beautiful rugs. These rugs became known for containing many intricate, detailed vine-scrolls. They also frequently use palmette symbols.
