Beautiful Large Oversized Decorative Antique Persian Malayer Rug, Country of Origin / Type of Rug: Persian Rugs, Circa of Date: 1900 – Malayer carpets are a special class of carpets, and one of these qualities and size is a rare piece. The village of Malayer is located in Northwest Persia, between Hamadan and Sarouk. Many of the pieces from this area smaller, with only the occasional piece produced in a larger size. This impressive antique Persian carpet was produced around the turn of the 20th century and is an excellent example of the colors that are characteristic of carpets from the area.
Many of the smaller carpets from Malayer and the small villages around it were created by individual weavers. However, larger pieces, such as this one, were often created by entire families and were typically done on commission. A piece such as this could take the family over a year to create.
The piece has a delicate feel, using light blues, pinks, ivory, and lighter browns that are barely visible against a deep, chocolate background to create a striking effect. Many of the designs throughout the piece are created using subtle shades of color and outlining. The focus of the carpet is on the contrast between the lighter designs and the deeper background.
Much of the color is concentrated in the borders of the carpet, drawing the eye outward and away from the center of the carpet. This gives it a feeling of expansiveness and enhances its larger scale. The design of the carpet is an allover pattern that consists of a repeating motif. Although this carpet does not show the precision that is typically found in the carpets produced in cities, this one shows a high level of skill for a village carpet.
The skill of the family that created this piece is apparent in the workmanship and design of the carpet, making this an excellent example of a Malayer carpet. The lighter color palette set against the deep, chocolate background gives this carpet a striking, elegant feel that would be the perfect match for a more formal room. However, the simplicity of the design also makes it a unique antique rug that could complement a more rustic or larger Boho-chic design, too.
