Magnificent Paisley Millefleurs Design Small Antique Persian Kerman Rug, Country of Origin / Rug  Type: Persian Rug, Circa Date: 1900 –  This all-over paisley millefleur pattern exemplifies the preciseness and quality of the Persian rugs from the city of Kerman. Millefleur literally means “thousand flowers” in French and refers to designs that have densely packed flowers such as the ones we see in the design of the body of this antique rug.

The history and tradition that is present in this small scatter size rug goes beyond its actual physical age. The weavers of this magnificent antique carpet have obviously descended from a long line of master rug weavers who passed down the weaving traditions and designs through the centuries. Knowing the history of the rug makes the rug even more beautiful.

Bold blue outlines and a fascinating use of negative space create the paisley outlines and dense floral design that stand out against the ivory background. Multiple borders, like those seen in antique Kashmir shawls, frame the antique Oriental rug and feature repeating flowers that provide a sense of rhythm and regularity to the design. The directional aspect of the design draws the gaze upwards in the direction of the top of the paisley pattern.

The repeating floral pattern of this magnificent small antique Persian Kerman rug features what is known in Western design as a paisley. In Persian / Farsi, the design was known as the “boteh” and was used as a symbol that can mean eternal life, fertility, the universe or an expecting mother to be. It is sometimes called the seed of life.

Many different flowers and and what looks like tiny birds can be found in and around the boteh patterns. Each one of these patterns has its own significance and viewing the rug in this way makes it even more spectacular.

Only once one begins to explore the intricacies of the pattern can the true beauty of this small antique Persian Kerman rug be appreciated. There is much more to this rug than its beautiful design. It is steeped in the history of a traditional culture.

This rug can be used on the floor or as a wall hanging antique tapestry rug. Regardless of how it is displayed, it is sure to bring a sense of worldliness and culture to any room’s interior decor.
