Small Size Pictorial Design Antique Persian Mohtasham Kashan Mashahir Rug, Country Of Origin / Rug Type: Persian Rug, Circa Date: 1880– The masterworks of designer and master weaver Ustad Mohtasham are some of the most prized and recognizable works of the late 19th century. Kashan was an area that had a reputation for producing some of finest carpets in history since the Safavid Dynasty. In the late 1800’s, there was an effort to revive the area as carpet weaving center. This antique Persian Kashan carpet dates from about the 1880’s during the height of this revival.
The antique carpets of Mohtasham are known for their high quality and bright, vibrant colors that stand the test of time. This antique Oriental carpet is no different in these respects, but it is the design that makes it stand out as a rare collectible. This carpet is divided into a formal field and borders. However, within each one is an important ruler or person in Persian history.
One of the more unique features of the rug is that if one examines the clothing of the figures, it depicts persons from ancient to more modern times. It is almost as if the piece has a timeline that begins in the lower left hand corner of the antique Persian rug and proceeds counterclockwise around the outer border of the pictorial rug. It continues beginning in the lower left-hand corner of the field of the rug and continues with the more modern figures in the top row.
This extremely fine and artistic antique rug is like a time capsule of Persian history leading up to the time of the creation of the rug at the end of the 1800’s. If one were to have the time, it may be possible to identify each of the figures in the carpet to bring an even greater depth of understanding of its intent. This is a remarkable piece for its historical importance and for the ability to the artist to create portraits in such fine detail that they can be recognized and honored. This antique Mashahir rug is a remarkable addition to any collection.
