Room Size Antique Persian Heriz Carpet, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: First Quarter of the Twentieth Century – Here is a compelling and impressively woven antique Oriental rug – an antique Heriz carpet that was woven in Persia during the early decades of the twentieth century. Richly decorated and complex throughout, this appealing antique Heriz carpet is characterized by the intricacy of its design, as well the authenticity of its tribal elements. The entire composition is extremely elaborate, from its borders through to its field. The borders are composed of an inner and outer border of pale gold which surround a primary border of dark blue. Throughout each border of this antique Persian carpet runs an intricate floral and vine scroll pattern that anticipates the overall complexity of the piece in a deeply effective manner. Within the borders, corner pieces of red, also richly adorned, pierce into a field of ivory. While small relative to the rest of the composition, this portion of the carpet is as richly decorated as any other area. Indeed, the impression is that it is even more complex, an effect heightened by the high contrast nature of its ivory coloring. A monumental medallion dominates the piece, occupying almost the entire field. Portions of red and dark blue alternate, layered one on top of the other, make up this medallion, adding even more grandeur to this magnificent example.
Measuring nine-by-thirteen feet, this beautiful piece is perfectly room-sized and would fit wonderfully with both traditional and modern interiors. Composed in a classic color combination of red, cream, and navy, this piece would complement a variety of home decor styles.
Heriz carpets are known for being very durable, which is apparent in this piece. At approximately 100 years old, it is in excellent condition, and is made to last for many more generations. Contrary to rugs made in other areas of Persia, rugs from Heriz are made with the symmetric Turkish or Ghiordes knot, which is attached to a specially woven foundation that includes a thick cotton warp and weft, increasing its durability. Unlike new rugs which begin to lose value as soon as they’re placed on a floor, antique handmade carpets such as this Heriz rug develop a lovely patina as they age, which only enhances their beauty and interest. Antique Persian rugs are an excellent decorating option, as they provide lasting beauty and interest for years and years.
The design of this antique Persian Heriz carpet is extremely detailed, and features both geometric and floral motifs. The field and borders of this rug are as detailed and rich as its large central medallion, giving the rug a sense of balance. The classical design and beautiful complexity of this antique Persian Heriz carpet makes it a wonderful choice for any interior space.
