This beautiful antique Persian Heriz rug, circa 1900, which features a traditional “Garden Design”. Composed in a lovely palette of warm rust accented by light blues and greens, this rug would make a gorgeous addition to any interior.

The famed “Garden Design” featured on this rug refers to the portrayal of flowers, trees and other vegetation within a grid-like pattern, representing traditional palatial Persian gardens. Gardens were important in Persian life, representing paradise, and were portrayed on carpets to bring the visual and aesthetic appreciation of the exterior effulgence into the interior. Persian Garden carpets, which are traditionally separated into four sections composed of six plots each, can be taken as fairly accurate renderings of their real floral counterparts. These grid-like gardens often contained elaborate fountains, and had lush waterways cutting through them, from North to South and East to West. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the earliest formal Garden Design carpets date back to the sixteenth century, coinciding with the era of the Safavid Empire, which has been called the height of Persian artistic output.

This particular Persian carpet boasts a neutral but lively palette which feels cheerful and timeless. Its size, 9 feet by 10 feet, is the perfect size for many contemporary rooms. This carpet would fit seamlessly into both traditional, formal settings, as well as more modern and eclectic rooms.
