Antique Persian Bakshaish Rug, Origin of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Late 19th Century – Here is an elegant antique rug – a Persian piece of Bakshaish design, characterized by a straightforward design that beautifully complements its vertical dimensionality. Classically composed, this Bakshaish rug features a traditional layout and an allover pattern. Working from the outside inward, we first encounter an unadorned area of soft brown, which works effectively as an outer border, and works to effectively extend the field beyond the confines of the border. The primary border itself is characterized by a classic pattern of  vine scrolls and vegetation, filled in beautifully white ivory and a soft red-brown tone, both of which complement the soft brown of the field. The field itself, which is twice as long as it is wide, communicates a great deal in the negative space in between the abstract geometric figures that compose the allover pattern, with the beautiful soft-brown tone and its patina standing out boldly. The pattern itself is beautifully worked with impeccable spacing – the field is neither overly busy, nor too sparse. A work of impressive balance, this antique Bakshaish Persian carpet is an understated example of classical composition.
