Square Size Antique Bakshaish Carpet, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Final Quarter of the Nineteenth Century – Here is a truly alluring antique Oriental rug – an antique Bakshaish carpet that was woven in Persia during the waning years of the nineteenth century. Resplendent with complex and traditional design elements throughout, from the allover pattern of its field to its intricate borders, this antique Bakshaish rug highlights the exciting aesthetic of its style. First, an exciting series of borders run along the perimeter of this antique Persian carpet. The outermost is the simplest – a narrow band of unadorned gold, which represents the only portion of this carpet without any aesthetic flourishes. Next, a narrow pair of black lines separate the golden border from a zig-zagging border of red and blue. Following this comes a border richly decorated with beautiful floral details. Finally, the primary border follows, red and rich with flowers, vine scrolls, and other vegetal details. An inner border matching the flowery outer border comes next, before we encounter the lovely field of soft blue. Featuring a stunning abrash, the field is also decorated with a complex, repeating pattern of interlocking vine scrolls and floral flourishes. A beautiful example, this antique Bakshaish carpet showcases the enduring appeal of tribal rugs and carpets.
