Antique Persian Heriz Serapi Carpet, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Late 19th Century – Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique Oriental rug – an antique Persian carpet, woven in the Heriz Serapi rug style by the inimitable weavers of that famed rug-producing region. An exceptional piece, this Heriz Serapi rug brilliantly captures the finest characteristics of a widely admired style, a style which effortlessly blends together the traditional, tribal approach to antique rug weaving with the more refined, cosmopolitan approach that typifies those carpets referred to as “City Rugs.” And this particular example has an especially intriguing provenance, having previously belonged to the celebrated, Academy Award winning American actor Dustin Hoffman, whose New York City apartment it called home. A truly beautifully woven piece, this Serapi Heriz rug features a traditional border of red, richly decorated with flowing, scrolling vine scrolls and charming floral motifs. Within the border, one finds a sort of inner border, also meticulously detailed, which extends into four triangular corner pieces, brilliantly framing the field. The field itself is a deep blue, classically adorned with intersecting vine scrolls composed of the tones found throughout the remainder of the piece. In the center of the field is a gorgeous, outsized medallion, bright red and decorated throughout with graceful flowers, and more sinuous vine scrolls. A beautifully balanced piece, this antique Heriz Serapi utilizes shades of blue, red, and ivory in a complementary manner throughout, and features a precisely executed composition. Boasting an exceptional design as well as a unique provenance, this antique Heriz Serapi carpet from Persia is a fantastic example of an important style of antique Oriental rugs.
