Antique Persian Ghashghai Rug 50014

Size: 4 ft x 11 ft 6 in (1.22 m x 3.51 m)
Origin: Persian Rugs

Antique Ghashghai Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900 –The black field of this long runner rug contrasts with the broad, white border and serrated connecting brown and beige corner spandrels in a dramatic way. Three rows of predominantly red, white and blue connecting geometric shapes course vertically across the field from one end to the other. The spandrels each display flower blossoms with multi-colored petals; the thin dark brown edge carries forward vertically in a jagged line to provide an internal frame for the field. The broad white border depicts large, vivid scrolling blossoms in red, brown and blue colors. An outer guard border, very colorful, presents a sequence of ruyi symbols and tiny geometric shape in vivid pink, blue, cream, red, brown and black hues. Although today they usually reside in permanent settlements, the people who traditionally wove and knotted Ghashghai rugs lived mainly in southwestern Iran in the past, where they tended herds of sheep and goats. Their carpets usually consist of wool from their herds, sometimes with the inclusion of horse hair.
