Antique Gashgai/Qashqai Persian Overcoat, Country Of Origin: Persia, Circa date: Turn of the 20th Century – Here is a truly exceptional antique Qashqai chapan or cherpi overcoat, woven in Persia around the turn of the twentieth century. Generally speaking, antique weaves – including rugs and carpets, horse covers, and garments such as this example – woven in the Qashqai style are widely sought after and valued for the deep sense of cultural authenticity that they communicate. Once designed as protective garments, chapan or cherpi overcoats became increasingly colorful and elaborate. Overcoats produced from Persia to the Far East are traditionally lined with cotton or woven fabric imported from Russia. In this unique overcoat, a floral print is used on the back of the sleeves and the inside is lined with an ornate lampas-style fabric indicating the care and expense that was taken to select the best quality materials for this elegant tribal piece.
