Beautifully Antique Persian Silk Rashti Embroidery Textile 70225, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900 – This striking silk antique embroidery textile comes from Rasht, a city located on the beaches of the Caspian Sea that is known as the “City of Rain.” This antique textile was produced around the turn of the 20th century in an area that was a center for silk production and export since the Safavid Dynasty of the 1500’s. Rasht is located in what is modern day Iran. Its history is closely tied to the textile industry, particularly that of silk production.

As one can see, the work produced by the Rashti textile artisans uses intricate designs and striking colors. What is one of the most amazing facts about this textile is that each individual stitch was done by hand. This Persian Rashti textile is a labor of love and took untold hours to produce.

The antique Iranian textile is silk applique work on a black background. Black is a color that we take for granted today with our modern dyes, but prior to industrial revolution, producing black fabric was a long and complicated process. This antique Rashti textile uses chain stitch and stem stitch as the primary stitches. However, one can also find some examples of leaf and satin stitch throughout. These are the most common stitches found in antique textiles from this area.

The colors of this Persian Rashti embroidery are striking and the artist used high contrast to bring out the design. One can find a plethora of flora and fauna throughout. It is a charming piece that will make a statement in any room. The design is reminiscent of many of the medallion carpet designs found in Persia.

This captivating antique Rashti Embroidery would be used as a rug, mounted as a wall tapestry, or used as a table cover. Regardless of where you use it, this piece will draw attention and transform any interior design into a work of art.
