Antique Afshar Rug, Persia, 1920 — This beautiful antique rug displays a dark field entirely filled with a repeating motif of blue, white and red similarly-shaped (but not always identical) geometric designs. Curving features in the design alternate to the right or the left as the eye moves vertically along the Afshar rug, lending it a vibrant, active quality. A red border carries alternating brown and blue and red octagonal medallions. Each contain flowers and are interspersed by boteh symbols. The two cream-colored guard borders each bear unique geometric scrolling patterns in detailed red, blue and brown hues. An extremely narrow red and black jagged outer guard border encloses the afshar rug.
