Antique Afshar Rug, Persia, Early 20th Century — The elaborate floral motif in this luxurious light indigo and deep blue area rug conveys a sense of careful attention to detail. The rich blue field depicts twin ornate vases, each bearing a contrasting cascading flowering tree, with white blossoms highlighted in indigo and orange blossoms tinged with white, or vice versa. Bright orange and white flowers grow near the base of each tree. This Afshar rug displays an indigo border carrying repeating leaf patterns composed of tiny florets; the two guard borders reflect contrasting hues of flowers against a white background. The Afshar people of Iran today remain semi-nomadic. They are renowned for creating highly detailed handwoven rugs depicting exquisitely detailed flowering blossoms. Rugs from the region often utilize deep blue or rust colors quite effectively.
